The programme

About the programme

Flower Arrangement is the school's creative programme, taught for the care setting: the reception desk of a clinic, the ward table, the activity hour in a care home.

What the programme covers

Conditioning and handling of cut flowers, the mechanics of an arrangement — foam, vessels, support and water — colour and proportion, seasonal and budget choices, and the practical constraints of a hospital or care home: no scent in a respiratory ward, nothing that sheds on a sterile trolley, nothing a confused resident can mistake for food.

How it is taught

Eight two-hour sessions, each one building an arrangement and taking it apart again. The last session is planned as a therapeutic activity: how to run a group session for residents, with the materials, the timing and the supervision it needs.

Where it leads

Activity programming in care homes and hospitals, reception and events work in a clinic, and a skill a carer can bring into the day of somebody who is unwell.
